In Search class this morning, we briefly discussed the readings and Rosa Luxembourg, but mostly focused on Imperial Germany. We talked about The German Confederation, the Rise of Prussia, and finally Imperial Germany. It was a lot of German history, but I think the more background you have on a country the more you can understand of its current form. Plus, I love history so it really was an interesting class for me.
In German, we talked about the German flag and the symbolism of its colors. Professor Kronenberg explained how the German school system worked. We also talked about important German dates, and German geography. I would be more embarrassed about how little German geography I knew if I weren't sure that everyone else was pretty much in the same boat. I only know a few cities, and the locations of rivers and mountain ranges are still a mystery to me.
After lunch, we went to one of our funnest excursions yet. The Völklinger Hütte is a an old steel factory, a section of which that has been shut down. Some parts of it date back to 1900. It's a World Heritage site today, and they've reopened it as a museum.

Our guide was the best guide of the entire trip. He had a way to make you listen - his method was to invade your personal space and stare deep into your eyes as he talked. It made me super uncomfortable, as it did everyone, but no one was going to risk zoning out when he was a few inches away from your face, staring straight at you. He was funny too! When the professors had lagged behind with another student or two, he fell silent and glared at them in that teacher way when they were waiting for someone to stop being disrespectful. It was hilarious. He also made sure that we knew that coffee to go was a German invention, particularly from that factory.
The factory had some amazing architecture, and the scale of it was mind-blowing. It was such a beautiful, unique place.

Everyone had a lot of fun. I even spotted some cool graffiti at the end to take a picture of. All in all, a great excursion.
